Question Stones and Living Oracles

What do I mean by a Living Oracle?

I work with two different living oracles, my Crystal Runes and the Elder Futhark.

I call them living oracles because I don't experience either of them as having rigid, cut-and-dried meanings.

Of course, each crystal rune and each Elder Futhark rune has its own character, history and wisdom, but that is only the beginning of the conversation.

Their meaning comes alive through the person asking the question, what is happening in their life, where the crystals fall and the diferent patterns that form between them.

The same rune can speak quite differently from one reading to the next.

After working with my crystal runes since 1987, they still surprise me. They have taught me not to assume I already know their story, but to stay open to their patterns in each cast.

The crystal runes are really very dynamic.

What makes an oracle come alive in my opinion is that it continues to speak, teach and reveal something new all the time.

Through the Elder Futhark, I experience a conversation with Odin and the guardians of Asgard, while my crystal runes continue to teach me the language of the Crystal Kingdom.

I am gratefully still learning from both.

A Living Oracle Can Still Surprise Me

One of the things I love about working with my geomancy readings is that I know there is always more to know about life and it is change.

Aristotle, a dog I met in spirit form during a geomancy reading at Seven Sisters festival, Seymour, Victoria, taught me that I dont know my crystal runes as well as I thought I did.

During this woman's reading some years ago, my Significant Other crystal began to show me something I had never considered before.

Until then, I understood the rune through the significant relationships between my clients people. Aristotle opened another possibility,  that a significant other could also be a dog whose relationship with us has an uncanny and important role to play in our lives.

That reading changed my understanding of the crystal rune Significant Other. After all those 38 years of working with my crystal runes, they still were capable of showing me another side of their character.

For me, that is part of what makes an oracle living:

I don't just learn how to read the stones. I continue to learn from them.

Sometimes they remind me not to take a meaning too literally.

Sometimes they reveal another layer to a story.

And sometimes, as Aristotle did, they completely change the way I understand one of my crystal runes.

My Relationship With My Crystal Runes

I have worked with my crystal runes since 1987, and over that time our relationship has continued to grow.

I experience the system almost like a web, with each stone connected to the others through the patterns and relationships that form during a reading. No stone speaks on its own.

The crystals work together. Where they land on the Medicine Wheel, the crystals around them, the patterns they form and the story my client brings to the reading all influence what I see.

A crystal I have known for decades can still show me another aspect of its character when it lands in a different cast.

The Crystal Kingdom is a wonderful place to learn a new language. Crystals are great kindred to have and to hold and after all these years, I am still learning how to hear what my crystal rune family have to say.

Much of my intuition has developed through working with these crystals.

I have learned to relax into the reading, to notice the feeling of the pattern and not rush to decide what something must mean.

I experience the crystal runes as working with my higher self and with the higher self of my client.

My part is to listen, remain curious and trust the relationship we have developed.

They help me hold and protect the energy and space of a reading, and I have a sense that the cast of crystals continues working with great love for the people they have connected with, long after the reading itself has finished.

I use three heavy, dense stones on my table to create a portal around my client, the reading, myself and Georgie galah, sitting patiently on my shoulder.

This portal is a void. It can hold what we are exploring, help bring something new into possibility, and give us somewhere to release what is ready to go.

I sometimes think of it as a kind of universal black hole, a space where energy can be held, transformed or released. We are all star dust after all, and this type of creation spreads all across the Universe for us to tap into.

The Elder Futhark. The Other Living Oracle.

The Elder Futhark is the other living oracle I work with.

These ancient runes came into my practice through Odin's grace in 1987, and even though they have traditional meanings and a long history, I don't experience them as having a rigid interpretation.

Just like my crystal runes, their meaning comes alive through context.

An Elder rune can speak differently depending on the person, the question and what is happening in their life at that particular moment.

Odin's stone is included in all of my geomancy readings.

The question is: Where does it land on the cloth?

Wherever Odin lands, my client draws an Elder Futhark rune, sometimes more than one, bringing my second living oracle into the reading.

The rune is placed beside its crystal in the corresponding quadrant of the Medicine Wheel. My observations and experiences with this relationship since 1987 eventually led me to create Odin's Magical Oracle.

The two systems are different, and I don't try to make one behave like the other.

Each has its own language and wisdom, but together they reveal another layer to our very human story.

So Where Do the Question Stones Fit?

The 5 Question Stones give you a way to bring the things that matter to you directly into the reading. They are beautiful crystals without a fixed meaning of their own. You decide what you want each one to represent.

A Question Stone might represent a person, a relationship, your work, money, a decision you are facing, or something happening in your life that you want to understand more clearly.

Once you have named what the stone represents, it becomes part of the cast.

Where it lands on the Medicine Wheel, which crystal runes are close to it and the relationships that form around the cloth adds another layer to the story.

You don't have to fit your question into my system.

The Question Stones allow your own life and your own questions to have a physical place within the reading.

You can keep your question private if you choose and you are also welcome to ask as many questions as you like of the cast and the cloth.

Giving Your Question a Place on the Medicine Wheel

Once you have decided what your Question Stone represents, it becomes part of the cast.

You don't need to explain your question to me. You can hold it quietly within yourself and simply know what the crystal represents for you.

Where the Question Stone lands gives your question a physical place on the Medicine Wheel.

I look at the quadrant it has landed in, the crystal runes nearby, and the relationships and patterns forming around it.

Sometimes a Question Stone lands close to a crystal that immediately adds another perspective.

Sometimes the interesting part is the space around it, or a connection to something happening elsewhere across the Wheel.

This is where your question becomes part of the larger story of the cast.

It has its own place on the map of the Medicine Wheel, but it doesn't stand there alone.

You Don't Have to Know the “Right” Question

Sometimes you arrive at a geomancy reading knowing exactly what you want to ask.

Other times, you simply know that something in your life doesn't feel quite right, or that change is happening and you are not yet sure what you need to understand.

You don't need to find the perfect words before we begin.

A Question Stone can represent a person, a situation, a choice, a feeling, or simply something you want to explore more deeply.

And sometimes the best place to begin is with no specific question at all. “Show me what I need to know” has always been a powerful way to open a reading.

The crystals have a wonderful way of finding the story. Your job isn't to ask the perfect question. It is simply to be open to what might be asking to be seen.

The Oracle, the Question and the Person

THE ORACLES

Both sets of runes bring their own wisdom, relationships and patterns to every cast.

THE QUESTION

Your question gives us a place to dwell, whether spoken aloud or held quietly within.

THE PERSON

You bring your own story, experiences and possibilities.

Leave Room for the Story to Change

A reading is not about fixing your future in place.

It is about looking at what is present now, the patterns, relationships and possibilities that can be seen across the Medicine Wheel.

Sometimes a different perspective is enough to change what becomes possible.

After working with these stones since 1987, they still surprise me.

Perhaps the gift of a living oracle: there is always another part of the story waiting to be seen.
